August 5, 2000: Started work on dismantling the rear brakes today. The backing plate assemblies were removed from the axle a couple of years ago when preparing to rebuild the axles. While dismantling the brakes I discovered a couple of problems. First, the 'short' shoe had been placed on the front instead of the rear. This accelerated the wear on the front shoe even though the 'long' shoe showed almost no wear. My dad and I installed it with the 'short' shoe on the front in 1981 when we rebuilt the brakes because that's the normal installation method. Not so on the Willys as I've learned recently. Another anomaly was the rear hold-down clip (the right one in the picture.) I'm not sure what happened here but the original clip went AWOL and what looks like a fabricated clip took its place.

The passenger side rear brakes had no anomalies outside of the 'short' shoe on the front with the resulting increase in wear. The backside of the plate, however, did have a thick coating of the all-weather ManureBacTM protective coating - close to an inch thick in spots.

September 27, 2000: The passenger side rear backing plate
cleaned up rather well, as
can be seen in the picture. This is the same plate that is in the
previous picture but after a lot of scraping, brushing, soaking, and
a trip through the dishwasher.
The original backing plate on the driver's side rear didn't clean up as well. There was a substantial amount of rust pitting on the inside. Given the overall condition I decided to replace it with a backing plate off of a 1958 model. Now I just have to clean the hub, drum, and miscellaneous parts and the rear brakes will be ready for painting and then installation. October 23, 2000: While continuing work on the front brakes I discovered that the shoe linings had worn through and gouged the drums. New drums and steering knuckles were ordered from Krage Motorsports. |

November 4, 2000: The new drums and knuckles arrived this week.
With the help of a friend (Dr. Dave) all of the brake parts have been
cleaned and are ready to paint. One of the spindles looked like the
wheel bearings had spun more than once so it was time for a replacement.
A new spindle was ordered this week from Krage Motorsports.
November 18, 2000: All of the brake and knuckle components (except the drums and wheel cylinders) were painted today with POR-15. The drums will be painted using a high-temp exhaust coating from POR-15. Once that's done it's time for installation! |

| January 4, 2001: Almost all of the brake parts together for a group photo. After taking this picture I assembled the backing plates. If all goes well tomorrow, the rear wheels will be back on the ground for the first time in four years! | |||
